In 1992, Thaemlitz began focusing on producing his own
tracks which expanded on his concept of DJ-ing as a form
of tape manipulation. Thaemlitz started his own record label,
Comatonse Recordings, which continues to demonstrate his
commitment to underground club DJ's by only using audiophile
vinyl for 12" releases. His first release, Comatonse.000,
gained international recognition from such preeminent ambient
producers as Mixmaster Morris [The Irresistible Force] and
The Orb. In 1993 Thaemlitz entered a multi-record deal with
New York's Instinct Records, and his first full-length release
Tranquilizer has been received as a work which challenges
the boundaries of Contemporary Ambient music.
Unlike many producers in the Contemporary Ambient genre
who rely heavily on the sounds of older analogue synthesizers,
Thaemlitz' avid interest in technology has resulted in a
strictly digital computer-based studio set-up. Similarly,
his Comatonse label's second release Anti-Instrumentations,
by Erik Dahl [original porter of Csound.ppc], features three
works which are entirely the product of computer generated
synthesis - no traditional musical instruments, electronic
or otherwise, contributed to their production. Thaemlitz'
utilization and promotion of alternative technologies reflects
his interest in shifting the boundaries of musical genres
and challenging conventional notions of "artistic expression."
