Berlin based sound artist Carsten
Nicolai aka alva.noto has established himself as a leading member
in the realm of electronic sound and visual designers whom are
using art and music as hybrid tools to create microscopic views
of creative processes. Nicolai has performed and created installations
in many of the world's most prestigious spaces including The
Guggenheim NYC, MOMA SF, MOMA Oxford, NTT Tokyo, and BiennaleVenedig
Italy. He is also a member of the exceptional label, Raster-Noton,
responsible for the acclaimed CD series '20' to 2000' that went
on to win the 'Golden Nica' prize at Prix Ars Electronica 2000.
Now, Raster-Noton and Mille Plateaux team up to release alva.noto's
second release for Mille Plateaux(prototypes EFA08082 still
available). alva.noto plays with the rules of physicality. Sound
is changed and evolved into time and space sinustones made use
by looping oscillators, tone generators and modem sounds - the
essense of pure electricity becomes audible. "transform"
could be referred to as 'posthuman funk'- Nicolai works without
sequencers, but mathematically edits the album to give his compositions
precise rhythmic structures. Clicks and glitches are not used
as ornamental additions to the compositions but make up the
essential elements. These sound sources are applied to the rhythmic
groove of Hip-Hop and R&B. Like nothing you have ever heard,
alva.noto ignores the limits between genres and brings experimentalism
one step closer to the clubs.
